Sony has announced its new flagship high-resolution camera, the A7R VI, featuring a fully stacked full-frame sensor with 66.8 megapixels of resolution and up to 16 stops of dynamic range.

The new sensor architecture allows for a much faster readout speed, enabling higher burst rates and improved video performance.

The A7R VI will cost $4,499.99 when it launches in June, $600 more than the A7R V launched in 2022.

New Features and Improvements

The A7R VI inherits features from other Alpha models, including Sony’s AI-based autofocus system, now improved with Real-time Recognition AF+.

A new 9.44 million dot OLED viewfinder and backlight illumination for the camera’s buttons are also included.

The grip design has been slightly modified to accommodate a new, higher capacity NP-SA100 battery, which promises up to 710 shots on a charge.

The NP-SA100 battery has a 2670mAh capacity, a 17 percent increase over the old NP-FZ100 battery.

Performance and Video Capabilities

The stacked sensor and new Bionz XR2 processor enable continuous blackout-free burst shooting of up to 30 frames per second.

The A7R VI can record 8K video in the full sensor width at up to 30p, and 4K video at up to 120p, both without cropping.

The camera also supports dual gain shooting for reduced noise and minimizing loss of shadow detail.

In-body image stabilization up to 8.5 stops and dual USB-C ports are also included.

The A7R VI will be available in June, and while the price increase may be steep for some, it’s a more affordable option compared to Sony’s flagship A1 II and A9 III bodies.

For general purpose, portrait, or nature photographers who value resolution, the A7R VI may be a better proposition.

The camera’s new features and improved performance make it a more versatile option, despite the higher price point.
