Amazon has made a breakthrough in data center technology, claiming it will make its facilities more resilient and power efficient.
The new architecture, which uses resilient network graphs (RNG), is expected to reduce the number of routers and switches by 69% and power consumption by 40%, while providing 33% better throughput. This is achieved through two key innovations: the ShuffleBox, a device that randomizes physical cable connections, and Spraypoint, a custom traffic-routing algorithm.
They rely on a theory pioneered by Hungarian mathematicians in 1959, called random network graphs, specifically the Erdős–Rényi model. This model allows for the creation of graphs with predictable statistical properties, despite being randomly connected. The company’s use of this model is a significant development in the field of data center technology.

The new RNG technology allows data to move across a larger number of random routes, creating many alternative paths between any two points. This approach makes the network more efficient and reliable.
The ShuffleBox is a key component of this technology, as it can shuffle physical cables randomly, according to the random network graph concept. The ShuffleBox is a critical part of Amazon’s RNG technology.
Spraypoint helps to reduce congestion by “spraying” data packets randomly across multiple neighboring routers. This spreads traffic out and reduces crowded hotspots, making the network more reliable. The use of Spraypoint and ShuffleBox together creates a more efficient and reliable network.

Reducing Power Consumption
Reducing the power draw of data centers is vital to ensuring their construction doesn’t harm the environment and power grid. With many data centers seeking construction permits, the power consumption of these facilities is a major concern.
Amazon’s RNG technology could make a significant impact by reducing power consumption and increasing efficiency. By doing so, this technology could help mitigate the negative effects of data center construction on the environment and power grid.
Amazon is also exploring other ways to reduce its environmental impact, including the use of vintage graphics drivers and more efficient cooling systems. The company’s efforts to reduce its energy consumption and environmental impact are ongoing.
