Google plans to shut down its Gems feature by November 17, 2026. The company announced that users will see a notice in the app indicating the change. During the transition period, the service will remain active, but the functionality will be replaced by Skills introduced through Gemini Spark. Google will automatically migrate existing Gems to Skills, ensuring that user-created configurations are preserved.
What Gems and Skills Do
Gems, introduced in 2024, let users create custom versions of the model for specific tasks. Users could program the AI to brainstorm, act as a career guide, or function as a coding partner. A key differentiator was the ability to attach files for context and share these configurations with others. Skills, now the primary vehicle for this functionality, allow users to provide custom instructions. The new system simplifies invocation by using a backslash within the prompt box.

Consolidation Strategy
Google frequently consolidates features under a single umbrella brand. The company has a history of launching standalone communication apps only to merge them into the main suite. This approach reduces feature fragmentation and simplifies the user experience. By migrating Gems to Skills, Google continues to streamline its AI offerings, focusing on the tools that drive the most engagement.
