
The massive shift of computing power toward artificial intelligence data centers is forcing Google to tighten data usage across the Android app ecosystem. According to a recent update on the Android Developers blog, the company is implementing new quality requirements for apps on the Google Play Store. These rules aim to lower the memory footprint of applications through code optimization and stricter performance standards. This move comes as the mobile industry faces significant hardware supply constraints that are limiting the amount of memory available on new handheld devices.
New Standards for App Performance
Google Play is introducing two specific requirements. One focuses on reducing the memory usage of apps, while the other ensures a secure and seamless experience during device migration. The company states these measures will help developers handle industry-wide hardware limits and meet new performance thresholds. To assist with this transition, Google is adding code optimization parameters designed to prevent app slowdowns or crashes caused by poor performance. The search giant also plans to roll out new tools to alert developers when their apps exceed these thresholds.

Later this year, the company will release diagnostic tools that provide deeper insights. These tools will include a memory limiter feature to prevent apps from consuming too much device memory. “Through our ongoing investment in these enhancements, our goal is to help you continuously optimize your footprint and raise the experience you provide your users,” the blog post noted. Google has set February 2027 as the deadline for developers to meet these new thresholds.
Device Migration and Security Updates
Another key requirement involves the “Zero Tap Sign-in” feature for device migrations. All Play Store apps must meet this standard by April 2027. This means applications with user sign-ins—both optional and mandatory—will automatically restore their login state when moved to a new Android device using the Android Restore Creds API. Google also emphasized that apps and games failing to meet these standards may face reduced visibility and publishing capabilities on the platform. The company urged developers to start planning now to ensure their apps comply with the updated quality standards.

Developers often struggle to balance rich features with the physical limitations of a phone’s memory. When an app consumes too much RAM, the system struggles to keep up, leading to sluggish performance or unexpected shutdowns. This new policy shifts the burden of optimization to the developers, forcing them to rewrite core code to be more efficient. If they cannot achieve the required memory savings, their software will simply disappear from the store for many users, effectively forcing a hard choice between cutting features or losing their audience entirely. Google is betting that this pressure will force the Android ecosystem to clean up its act, resulting in faster, more stable apps for everyone.
