TP Link router prioritizes wireless over wired

The TP-Link Archer BE770 is a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router that prioritizes wireless performance over wired connectivity, offering strong 6 GHz and 5 GHz performance, but lacking in its 2.4 GHz capabilities. While it’s a good all-around router, its $400 price point raises expectations for higher-specced LAN ports.

The Archer BE770 has a unique design, with an hourglass profile and a shiny black plastic fascia, but its large size may be a concern for some users. It measures 4.1 x 11.7 x 10.4 inches and has a range of ports, including four GbE ports and two 10 GbE ports.

One of the notable features of the Archer BE770 is its support for strike talks and expands the user’s network capabilities, allowing users to link up compatible TP-Link networking devices to form a mesh network. This functionality is rare in a router at this price point.

The initial setup of the Archer BE770 can be completed using the TP-Link Tether smartphone app or a web browser, and the process is relatively straightforward. The router’s GUI is no-frills, with a turquoise, gray, and white color scheme, and offers a range of features, including Network Map, Internet, Wireless, HomeShield, and Advanced tabs.

The HomeShield tab provides a limited set of features for free, including Network Check and parental controls, but users can upgrade to the “Pro” tier for additional features such as IoT Protection and intrusion detection. TP-Link offers its Security+ for $35.99/year or its Total Security Package for $69.99/year.

In terms of performance, the Archer BE770 excelled on the 6 GHz and 5 GHz bands, with iPerf3 throughput tests showing speeds of over 2,700 Mbps at close range and 1,813 Mbps at 25 feet. However, its 2.4 GHz performance was less impressive, with speeds of 84 Mbps at 6 feet and 73 Mbps at 25 feet.

The router’s port layout is a concern, with four GbE LAN ports instead of 2.5 GbE, which may not be sufficient for users who require faster wired connectivity. For equal money, users may be better served by TP-Link’s Archer BE800, which offers two 10 GbE ports and four 2.5 GbE ports.

Overall, the Archer BE770 is a good choice for users who prioritize wireless performance, but its limitations in terms of wired connectivity and 2.4 GHz performance may make it less appealing to some. As Wi-Fi 7 technology continues to evolve, users can expect to see more routers with improved performance and features, potentially leading to companies seeking a cut of revenue from undersea cables.

Key Features and Specifications

The Archer BE770 has the following key features and specifications:

    • Tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router
    • 6 GHz, 5 GHz, and 2.4 GHz bands
    • Four GbE LAN ports and two 10 GbE ports
    • Two USB 3.0 ports
    • EasyMesh support
    • HomeShield security features

For users who are looking for a router with strong wireless performance and a range of features, the Archer BE770 may be a good choice. However, its limitations in terms of wired connectivity and 2.4 GHz performance should be carefully considered by them.
